BitGo is moving to strengthen its position in the institutional crypto space by acquiring the trading business of NYDIG, a move that comes as market activity finally shows signs of life after a long stretch of quiet trading. The deal, announced this week, will fold NYDIG's institutional trading desk into BitGo's existing suite of services, which already includes custody, wallet infrastructure, and prime brokerage tools.
The acquisition is a clear signal that BitGo wants to be a one-stop shop for large investors who need both secure storage and active trading capabilities. NYDIG, known for its focus on Bitcoin and its work with banks and asset managers, has built a solid reputation in the institutional world. By bringing that trading operation in-house, BitGo can offer clients a more seamless experience, from holding assets to executing large orders without having to rely on multiple vendors.
This deal lands at a time when crypto trading volumes are rebounding. After months of low volatility and reduced interest, recent weeks have seen a noticeable uptick in activity, driven by renewed optimism around spot Bitcoin ETFs and a broader recovery in digital asset prices. For BitGo, that timing is no accident. The company appears to be positioning itself to capture a larger share of institutional flow as more traditional financial players re-enter the market.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The deal is expected to close in the coming months, subject to regulatory approvals. Once completed, BitGo says it will integrate NYDIG's trading technology and client relationships into its existing platform, with plans to expand product offerings later this year. The move also intensifies competition among custody and trading firms, as rivals like Coinbase and Gemini continue to push their own institutional services.
