China Factory Activity Shrinks Again as Export Orders Soften

China Factory Activity Shrinks Again as Export Orders Soften

China's manufacturing sector slipped back into contraction in October, undoing the modest rebound recorded a month earlier, as fresh data showed new export orders losing momentum.

The pullback points to persistent fragility in the world's second largest economy, where factory output has struggled to hold steady amid uneven global demand and cautious buying from overseas customers. The decline in new export orders was among the clearest signals of strain, suggesting that foreign buyers are holding back on commitments as they work through existing inventories and weigh uncertain economic conditions in key markets.

The reversal comes after September's brief improvement had raised hopes that the sector might be stabilizing. Those hopes now look premature. Manufacturers surveyed for the latest reading reported softer production schedules and reduced hiring plans, with many noting that order books are thinner than expected for this point in the year.

Analysts say the data reinforces the case for continued policy support, particularly measures aimed at shoring up domestic demand so that factories are less dependent on export volumes that can swing sharply from month to month. Without a firmer recovery in consumer spending at home, the manufacturing sector is likely to remain vulnerable to shifts in external demand.

The October reading also complicates the broader growth picture. Officials have been trying to balance support for industry with efforts to manage longer term structural adjustments, and a renewed downturn in factory activity suggests that balance remains difficult to strike. Attention now turns to whether the weakness is a one month dip or the start of a longer soft patch.
