The construction on University Avenue in City Heights is finally finished, but for some local business owners, the financial damage is far from over. One of them has now taken legal action, suing the city over what they describe as a prolonged and poorly managed construction project that nearly destroyed their livelihood.
The lawsuit, filed by a long-standing business on the corridor, claims that the project caused months of unnecessary delays, blocked access to storefronts, and drastically reduced foot traffic. The owner says the construction timeline stretched far beyond what was promised, leading to a steep drop in sales that the business has not recovered from. The suit argues that the city failed to provide adequate notice or support for affected merchants, leaving them to struggle without compensation.
While city officials have not yet commented on the pending litigation, the case highlights a growing frustration among small business owners in the area. Many say the construction, meant to improve infrastructure and safety, instead created a barrier that kept customers away. Even with the roadwork now complete, some storefronts remain empty, and others are barely hanging on.
The lawsuit seeks damages for lost income and business disruption. It also calls for better communication and planning in future projects. For now, the business owner hopes the legal action will bring some accountability and relief after what they call a "nightmare" that still haunts their bottom line.
