The mayor's latest effort to build a bridge to the business community is off to a rocky start. An attempt to form a new advisory council has run into resistance, as several prominent executives worry that signing on would look like a public endorsement of the mayor's administration. Despite repeated outreach and private meetings, many leaders remain hesitant to commit.

The council was supposed to be a straightforward way for companies to share concerns about zoning, taxes, and workforce development. But the political climate has made that simple idea complicated. Some business owners say they appreciate the gesture, but they are not convinced it will lead to real change. Others are more blunt, noting that the mayor's recent policy decisions have already created friction, and joining the council now could be seen as rewarding that behavior.

One source close to the discussions said the mayor's team has tried to ease those fears by promising the council would have genuine input, not just a ceremonial role. Still, the damage from earlier missteps appears to linger. A few firms have privately declined the invitation, while others are waiting to see who else signs up before making a final call.

The mayor's office insists the council is not about optics. Spokespeople point to a list of concrete items they want to tackle, including permit delays and small business loans. But without a critical mass of respected names on board, the initiative risks looking hollow. For now, the ball is in the business community's court, and they are not rushing to play.
