The Department of Homeland Security has ordered the immediate suspension of all dedicated TSA PreCheck and Global Entry lanes at airports across the United States. This unexpected move sidelines the expedited screening and customs processing lanes used by millions of pre-vetted travelers.
The closures are a direct result of a significant reallocation of personnel. Customs and Border Protection officers, who normally staff Global Entry kiosks, and TSA agents managing PreCheck lines are being temporarily reassigned. This shift aims to bolster resources at the southern border to manage increasing migrant encounters.
The operational change is expected to have a pronounced impact on airport efficiency nationwide. All travelers, including those enrolled in the paid programs, must now use standard security and customs lanes. Aviation officials warn that the loss of these dedicated fast lanes will create bottlenecks, particularly at major international hubs and during peak travel periods.
The closures are expected to significantly increase wait times, so travelers should budget extra time at the airport. There is no current timeline for when the dedicated lanes will be reinstated, leaving frequent flyers and trusted travelers in a state of uncertainty. Program members are advised to keep their membership active, as background checks and renewals continue, but must prepare for standard screening procedures until further notice.
