Colorado Democrats on the final day of the legislative session largely scrapped their effort to roll back a package of business tax breaks. The proposal would have redirected the resulting revenue into a new tax credit designed to support lower-income families. The collapse of the plan marks a significant defeat for party leadership, which had championed the measure as a way to make the state's tax code more equitable.
The bill faced intense opposition from business groups and some moderate Democrats, who argued that eliminating the breaks would hurt economic growth and job creation. Supporters of the plan contended that the tax incentives, many of which were enacted years ago, had outlived their purpose and were siphoning money away from essential public services. They pointed to the proposed family tax credit as a more direct way to help struggling households.
In the end, the clock ran out. With only hours left in the session, negotiators could not reach a compromise. The failure to advance the bill means the existing business tax breaks will remain in place, and the proposed credit for lower-income families will not move forward this year. Lawmakers from both sides acknowledged the issue is likely to resurface in future sessions, but for now, the effort is dead.
