Before moving from the United States to the United Kingdom five years ago, there were several aspects of life abroad that I wish I had understood better. One of the most significant adjustments was navigating the transportation system. Public transport in the UK is extensive but can be quite different from what Americans are accustomed to. Understanding the nuances of trains, buses, and the Oyster card system would have made my transition smoother.
Additionally, the work culture in England differs markedly from that in the U.S. The emphasis on work-life balance and the more formal communication style took some time to adapt to. I found that social interactions at work are often less casual, which was a shift from my previous experiences.
Lastly, grocery shopping proved to be an adventure in itself. The variety of products and the layout of stores can be quite different, and familiar brands may not always be available. Learning to navigate these aspects earlier would have eased my transition and enhanced my overall experience in the UK.
