When I tell people I have built seven companies, they usually assume I did it in New York or San Francisco. The truth is, I did all of it in a mid-sized market, and that choice turned out to be a massive advantage. For years, the startup world has pushed the idea that you need to be in a major hub to succeed. But after doing this repeatedly, I can tell you that the opposite is often true.
The biggest benefit is access. In a smaller city, you are never more than one phone call away from a decision maker. When I needed a supplier, a lawyer, or a beta tester, I could meet them for coffee that same week. In a big metro, you are competing with thousands of other founders for the same attention. Here, people actually answer their emails. That speed of connection means you can test ideas, get feedback, and pivot without the usual red tape.
Another thing that surprised me was the cost structure. My burn rate was a fraction of what it would have been in a coastal city. That meant I could bootstrap longer, keep more equity, and make decisions based on what was smart for the business, not what the investors wanted. When you are not bleeding cash on rent and salaries, you have the freedom to be patient.
There is also a sense of community that is hard to replicate. In a big city, everyone is competing for the same limited pool of talent and capital. In a mid-sized market, people know each other. They refer clients, share resources, and genuinely want you to win. That kind of network is not just nice to have; it is a strategic weapon.
Sure, there are trade-offs. You do not have the same density of venture capital or the constant buzz of events. But if you are willing to build a real business with real customers, the mid-sized market gives you a runway that big cities simply cannot offer. You just have to be willing to look past the skyline.
