(LETTER) Don't let nostalgia blind you to present business support

A recent letter to the editor struck a familiar chord, urging readers to remember the "good old days" of local commerce. While sentiment for mom-and-pop shops and handwritten ledgers is understandable, it risks blinding us to the very real support systems available for businesses right now.

Nostalgia is a powerful lens, but it often distorts the present. The past was not a golden age of easy success. Small businesses have always struggled with cash flow, competition, and changing markets. What has changed is the infrastructure of support. Today, we have city-backed small business development centers, low-interest loan programs, digital literacy workshops, and grant opportunities that simply did not exist twenty or thirty years ago.

Romanticizing a bygone era can lead to a dangerous passivity. Instead of chasing a ghost, we should be looking at the resources already in place. The local chamber of commerce, the economic development office, and even public libraries now offer free consulting, marketing help, and networking events. These are not abstract promises. They are tangible tools.

The best way to honor the past is to build a stronger present. Let us put down the rose-colored glasses and pick up the application forms, the business plan templates, and the mentor contact lists. The help is here. It is not in a memory. It is in the next meeting, the next workshop, and the next conversation you have with someone who wants to see you succeed today.
