Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX and Tesla are exploring a potential merger, a deal that would rank among the largest corporate combinations ever attempted. The tech billionaire said the idea has a lot of merit, pointing to the growing overlap between the two companies in artificial intelligence, robotics and advanced manufacturing.
Musk's comments suggest the companies could benefit from pooling resources as both expand into AI driven products. Tesla has been investing heavily in autonomous driving software and humanoid robots, while SpaceX continues to push satellite based communications and reusable launch systems. Bringing the two under one roof could streamline research spending and reduce duplication across engineering teams.
The proposal comes at a delicate moment for Tesla, whose core vehicle business faces intensifying competition and pressure on margins. SpaceX, by contrast, has seen its valuation climb sharply on the back of government contracts and commercial launch demand. A merger would create a sprawling entity spanning electric vehicles, space transport and AI infrastructure.
Investors are likely to scrutinize governance questions, given Musk's overlapping leadership roles and his history of shifting attention among his ventures. Analysts also note that any deal would face significant regulatory review. Musk did not offer a timeline or confirm that formal talks are underway, describing the discussions only as exploratory.
