San José Postpones Plan to Double Downtown Parking Rates After Business Owner Uproar

San José Postpones Plan to Double Downtown Parking Rates After Business Owner Uproar

San Jose has paused its plan to double parking meter rates in the downtown core following strong opposition from local business owners. The proposal, which would have raised the hourly rate from $1.50 to $3.00, was met with immediate pushback from merchants and restaurant operators who warned the increase would hurt their already struggling bottom lines.

Advocates for downtown businesses argued the hike would hit the service industry hardest. Many employees in restaurants, bars, and retail shops rely on metered parking for their shifts, and a sudden doubling of costs would eat into their wages. Critics also noted that downtown foot traffic has not fully recovered from the pandemic, making it a poor time to raise fees.

City officials originally framed the increase as a way to manage parking demand and generate revenue for street improvements. But after a series of heated public meetings and a petition signed by over 200 business owners, the city council voted to postpone the plan indefinitely. A council member said the city would instead form a working group to study the issue further and explore alternatives, such as tiered pricing or employee parking subsidies.

Local business owners expressed relief but remain cautious. One restaurant owner said the delay gives them breathing room, but they worry the proposal could resurface. For now, downtown parking rates will stay at their current level, and the city has promised to engage more directly with the business community before any future changes.
