Simile has secured $300 million in funding at a $2 billion valuation, betting that artificial intelligence can create digital replicas of consumers capable of predicting how real shoppers respond to products and marketing campaigns.
The company builds what it calls digital consumer twins, AI models trained to mimic the preferences, behaviors, and decision patterns of individual shoppers. These simulated consumers allow brands to test product concepts, packaging, pricing, and advertising before spending money on real-world campaigns. Instead of relying on focus groups or slow survey data, companies can run thousands of simulated reactions in hours and use the results to guide decisions.
Simile's approach reflects a broader push across the tech industry to apply generative AI to market research. Traditional testing methods are expensive and often produce small sample sizes, while AI-driven simulations promise speed and scale. The company says its models are grounded in real consumer data so that predictions stay close to actual behavior rather than drifting into fantasy.
The new funding will support hiring, model development, and expansion into new markets. Investors appear confident that synthetic consumers could become a standard tool for consumer goods companies, retailers, and advertising agencies. Still, the technology raises questions about accuracy and privacy, and whether simulated shoppers can truly capture the nuance of human taste. Simile's challenge will be proving that its digital doubles are reliable enough to trust with real budgets.
