Southlake man gets 9 years in prison for $8M business loan scheme

Southlake man gets 9 years in prison for $8M business loan scheme

A former Southlake lawyer has been handed a nine-year federal prison sentence for orchestrating an $8 million scheme that preyed on small-business owners in need of large loans. The man, whose legal practice once operated in the upscale Dallas suburb, was convicted on charges of wire fraud and money laundering after a lengthy investigation by federal authorities.

Court documents show that the attorney promised victims access to multimillion-dollar financing through fake lender networks. He collected hefty upfront fees, often ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars, while claiming to have secured approval for the loans. In reality, no such lenders existed, and the funds were diverted to personal accounts, luxury purchases, and to pay off earlier victims in a classic Ponzi-style structure.

Prosecutors detailed how the scheme ran for nearly four years, targeting business owners in real estate, hospitality, and healthcare who were struggling to secure traditional bank financing. Many victims lost their life savings or were forced into bankruptcy after the promised loans never materialized. The judge noted the defendant's abuse of his legal position and the devastating impact on victims, some of whom testified during the sentencing hearing.

In addition to the prison term, the man was ordered to pay full restitution of $8.1 million. His law license had already been suspended by the State Bar of Texas following the criminal charges. Federal agents urged other potential victims to come forward, though the investigation is considered closed. The case serves as a warning to small-business owners to verify any lender's credentials through official channels before paying upfront fees.
