The winning tune: Music school awarded $10K prize

PHILADELPHIA -- Before she stepped up to deliver her final pitch to judges and a packed room at the MLB All-Star Small Business Luncheon at Citizens Bank Park, Shana Pistilli wanted to talk about one thing: community. Pistilli, the founder and executive director of the Rubato School of Music, had already made it to the final round of the 2026 MLB & Mastercard Small Business Contest. But for her, the real win was already in the room.

The school, which provides music education to students across Philadelphia, was ultimately awarded the $10,000 grand prize. Pistilli said the money will go directly toward expanding their outreach programs, specifically targeting neighborhoods where access to music lessons is limited. She described the moment as surreal, standing in a major league ballpark and talking about the power of a simple scale or chord.

The contest judges were impressed not just by the school's financial plan, but by its mission. Rubato School of Music focuses on building confidence and discipline through music, not just producing virtuosos. Pistilli noted that many of their students come from backgrounds where arts funding has been cut. The prize money will help keep tuition low and instruments in hand.

For Pistilli, the luncheon was more than a competition. It was a chance to show that small businesses, especially those in the arts, can stand alongside the big names. As she accepted the oversized check, she reminded the crowd that music is not a luxury. It is a lifeline.
