Local companies are facing a sharp increase in ransomware attacks, email compromises, and phishing scams, according to cybersecurity experts monitoring the situation across the Islands. Recent incidents have left several firms locked out of their own data, with attackers demanding large payments in cryptocurrency to restore access.
One of the most troubling trends is the rise of sophisticated phishing emails that appear to come from trusted partners or internal executives. These messages trick employees into handing over login credentials or wiring funds to fraudulent accounts. In one case reported last week, a mid-sized logistics company lost over fifty thousand dollars before realizing the request was fake.
Cybersecurity analysts say the problem is not limited to large corporations. Small and medium businesses are frequent targets because they often lack dedicated IT security teams. "Attackers are using automated tools to scan for weak passwords and unpatched software," explained a local security consultant. "Once they find an opening, they move fast to encrypt files or steal data."
Experts advise business owners to take immediate steps. Enable multi-factor authentication on all email and financial accounts. Train staff to verify payment requests through a separate phone call. Keep backups offline and test them regularly. Do not pay ransoms, as there is no guarantee the data will be returned.
The message from local authorities is clear: digital dangers are not going away, but preparation can make the difference between a close call and a costly disaster.
