Walmart’s fashion boss garners top company award, transforms business

Walmart has never been the first name that comes to mind for trendy clothing, but that perception is changing fast. Under the leadership of Denise Incandela, the retailer's fashion division has quietly grown into a $20 billion business, a feat that recently earned her the company's highest internal award.

Incandela, who joined Walmart in 2020, was handed the task of overhauling an apparel business that had long been an afterthought. She brought in established brands like Reebok, Champion, and Sofia Vergara's denim line, while also launching private labels aimed at younger shoppers. The strategy paid off. Walmart's clothing sales have surged, and the company now competes more directly with Target and even off-price retailers.

The award, known internally as the Sam Walton Award, is given to executives who drive significant change. Incandela's team has focused on quality and fit, not just low prices. They redesigned basics like t-shirts and jeans, and improved the online shopping experience with better photos and sizing tools.

Industry analysts note that Walmart's apparel growth is coming at a time when many traditional clothing chains are struggling. Incandela's approach proves that even a giant retailer known for groceries and household goods can win in fashion if it listens to what customers actually want. Her next challenge will be keeping that momentum going as competition heats up.
