Several storefronts along Merrimon Avenue are telling customers to expect delays and possible road closures this weekend as planned demonstrations are set to take over the busy corridor. Business owners say they have been notified about the gatherings, which are expected to draw a significant crowd starting Saturday morning.
The demonstrations, organized by local activist groups, are meant to draw attention to recent policy decisions by the city council. Organizers have promised a peaceful event, but they also acknowledge that the size of the crowd could cause disruptions. Some shops have already posted signs on their doors, advising shoppers to plan extra travel time or use side streets to reach their destinations.
A few business owners expressed frustration about the timing, noting that weekend foot traffic is crucial for their bottom line. One coffee shop manager said they are considering closing early if the crowd becomes too large, while a nearby bookstore plans to stay open but will shift its entrance to the back alley.
City officials have not issued an official statement, but police have confirmed they will have extra officers on site to manage traffic and ensure safety. Parking restrictions along Merrimon will be enforced from early morning until late evening on both Saturday and Sunday.
Residents who live in the area are also being asked to remove vehicles from street parking to make room for emergency access. The demonstrations are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and are expected to wrap up by sunset.
