Area schools are stepping up efforts to connect students with high-demand construction careers, and a new lab at Bentonville High School is the latest example. The Crossland Construction Lab opened this week, giving students hands-on experience with tools, materials, and project planning in a space designed to mirror a real job site.
The lab is part of a broader push by school districts and local contractors to address a growing shortage of skilled workers. Construction firms across the region say they struggle to fill positions, from carpenters and electricians to project managers and estimators. By partnering with schools, companies hope to build a pipeline of talent that starts long before graduation.
One company executive said the goal is not just to teach technical skills but to change how students view the industry. Many young people do not realize the variety of careers available or the earning potential, he noted. The lab will allow students to try different trades, work on small builds, and learn safety protocols in a controlled setting.
School officials say the program will also tie into existing coursework, including math, physics, and design. Teachers plan to use the lab for cross-disciplinary projects, so students see how classroom lessons apply to real construction challenges. The first group of students is expected to use the space this semester, with plans to expand access to other grade levels next year.
