India Struggles to Cut Reliance on Chinese Goods as Trade Gap Widens

Trade between India and China has nearly doubled over the past five years, leaving New Delhi with a widening deficit and a difficult choice over how to build its industrial future.

The numbers tell a story that runs against the stated goals of Indian policymakers. Despite repeated pledges to reduce dependence on Chinese imports and boost domestic manufacturing, India keeps buying more from its northern neighbor. Electronics, machinery, pharmaceuticals, and solar components remain heavily reliant on Chinese supply chains.

New Delhi has tried several approaches. It raised tariffs on some goods, slowed approvals for Chinese investment, and launched production incentive programs aimed at bringing factories home. Those efforts have produced mixed results. In some sectors, local output has grown. In others, manufacturers still depend on Chinese parts because alternatives are either too costly or unavailable at scale.

The dilemma is sharp. Cutting Chinese imports too quickly could disrupt Indian industry and raise prices for consumers. Moving too slowly risks locking India into a subordinate position in global supply chains, especially as competition in manufacturing intensifies.

Analysts say the path forward likely involves targeted self-reliance rather than broad decoupling. Building domestic capacity in critical areas such as semiconductors, batteries, and advanced electronics will take years and heavy investment. Until then, India's trade relationship with China will remain a balancing act between economic necessity and strategic ambition.
