Mark Zuckerberg is taking his smart glasses pitch to the water. The Meta CEO recently revealed that he takes business calls while riding a jet ski, wearing his company's $800 Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. According to Zuckerberg, the person on the other end of the line had no idea he was speeding across a lake.
"The other person could not tell," Zuckerberg said in a recent interview. He described the experience as a glimpse of a future where smartphones become obsolete. The glasses, which feature built-in cameras, speakers, and a microphone, allow wearers to take calls, send messages, and capture hands-free video. Zuckerberg believes this kind of seamless, always-on wearable will eventually replace the need to pull out a phone.
The boast comes at a difficult time for Meta's hardware ambitions. Reality Labs, the division responsible for the smart glasses and virtual reality headsets, reported a staggering $19.2 billion operating loss last year. Despite the red ink, Zuckerberg has committed to spending billions more on augmented reality and AI-powered wearables. He argues that the technology is still in its early stages and that long-term adoption will justify the investment.
Critics point out that the current smart glasses lack a display and offer limited functionality compared to a smartphone. But Zuckerberg is betting that convenience will win out. If he can take a business call on a jet ski without anyone noticing, he says, the rest of the world will eventually follow.
