Mississippi State University came out ahead after the 2026 regular session of the Mississippi Legislature wrapped up. Lawmakers put money into the land-grant school's main goals and backed its faculty and staff.
Most of the university's day-to-day operations got the same funding as before. But leaders at MSU said they were happy with what the state did. The university is known as the top research school in Mississippi.
A university official said, "While the bulk of our operations saw level funding, I'm extremely pleased that the Mississippi Legislature and the governor supported our work." The official did not give exact dollar amounts but pointed to new investments in research programs and employee pay.
MSU is a land-grant institution. That means it has a special mission to teach, do research, and help communities across the state. The new funding will help the university keep top teachers and scientists. It will also support projects that bring in outside money and create jobs.
Lawmakers focused on keeping the budget steady for most state agencies. But they made room for extra money at MSU. The university plans to use the funds to grow its research work and improve services for students.
The session ended with MSU in a stronger spot than when it started. University leaders said they will keep working with state officials to get more support in the future.
