SpaceX has successfully prevented Russian forces from utilizing stolen Starlink internet terminals on the battlefield in Ukraine, according to company CEO Elon Musk. The action was taken after reports surfaced that Russian units had acquired the satellite communication devices through illicit means.
Musk confirmed that SpaceX engineers were able to remotely deactivate the specific terminals identified as being in Russian-controlled territory. He emphasized that no Starlink terminals have been sold directly or indirectly to the Russian government, and the company has no commercial relationship with Russian entities. The terminals in question are believed to have been captured from Ukrainian forces during combat operations.
Starlink, a constellation of thousands of satellites providing high-speed internet, has been a vital communications tool for Ukraine since the early days of the invasion. This incident highlights the ongoing technological dimension of the conflict, where control of digital infrastructure plays a critical role. SpaceX maintains a policy of not activating service within Russia's borders and stated it takes extensive measures to secure its network against unauthorized use, including geofencing capabilities to limit terminal operation to approved areas. The swift action underscores the company's commitment to supporting Ukraine's defensive efforts.
