Nashville small businesses weigh Super Bowl benefits and growing pains

The heart of Music City has always been its small businesses. But as Nashville prepares to host the Super Bowl, owners are facing a complicated equation: the promise of a massive economic boost versus the real headaches of a city under siege. For weeks, construction crews have been blocking streets, and the usual downtown parking spots have vanished. Local boutique owners and restaurant operators say they are already feeling the squeeze from reduced foot traffic as regular customers avoid the chaos.

Some see the event as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to cash in. A few bars and souvenir shops near the stadium have reported record sales from early arrivals, and some are planning extended hours and special menus to capture the tourist dollar. But for others, the math is less certain. A coffee shop owner in the Gulch told reporters that her regulars have stopped coming, and the surge of out-of-town visitors has not yet filled the gap. She worries that the temporary boost will not cover the cost of extra staff and lost daily business.

The city's infrastructure is also straining under the weight of the event. Ride-share prices have spiked, and delivery trucks are struggling to navigate blocked roads. For small businesses that rely on just-in-time inventory, this has meant empty shelves and missed orders. While the Chamber of Commerce projects a windfall of hundreds of millions, many mom-and-pop shops are asking if the price of the spotlight is too high. The answer, for now, depends on which side of the barricade you stand.
