Rivian is signaling that its push into more affordable electric vehicles may extend well beyond the upcoming R2 SUV. This is a key development for the EV maker as it tries to broaden its appeal beyond luxury buyers. The company has hinted at plans to develop additional variants and models that would sit below the R2 in price and size, aiming to capture a larger share of the mainstream market.
The R2 itself is expected to start around $45,000, a significant drop from the $70,000-plus price tags of the current R1T truck and R1S SUV. But Rivian's leadership has suggested that even lower-cost options are on the horizon. These could include a smaller crossover or a more utilitarian vehicle designed for urban and suburban drivers who do not need the off-road capability or range of the flagship models.
By expanding its lineup, Rivian hopes to compete directly with Tesla's Model Y and upcoming models from legacy automakers. The strategy also helps the company justify the massive investments in its new Georgia factory, which is being built to produce the R2 and future models at high volume. For now, the R2 remains the centerpiece of Rivian's growth plan, but the company is clearly thinking beyond that single vehicle. The goal is to build a family of EVs that can appeal to a wide range of budgets and lifestyles, not just the outdoor enthusiasts and early adopters who bought the first Rivians.
