McDonald's reported a slowdown in business during its latest quarter, with company executives admitting that a recent push to attract value-seeking customers did not land as intended. The fast food chain released its earnings on Tuesday, Aug. 4, showing that while overall revenue held steady, foot traffic and same-store sales growth lagged behind expectations.
The core issue, according to the company, was a shakeup of its digital deals and app-based offers. In an effort to streamline promotions and cut costs, McDonald's revamped how it delivered discounts to customers. But instead of drawing in more budget-conscious diners, the changes confused regulars and failed to generate the excitement of previous limited-time offers. Executives said the new system was too complicated, with some deals buried in the app or requiring multiple steps to redeem.
"We thought we were simplifying, but we actually made it harder for our most loyal customers," said a company spokesperson during the earnings call. "The intent was to highlight value, but the execution created friction."
The slowdown was most noticeable in the company's international markets, where inflation has made consumers more selective about eating out. Even in the U.S., where the chain has leaned heavily on its loyalty program, the number of active users dipped slightly compared to the prior quarter. McDonald's now says it will roll back some of the digital changes, bringing back straightforward meal bundles and clearer pricing.
Despite the stumble, the company reaffirmed its full-year outlook, noting that breakfast sales and chicken sandwich offerings remain strong. Investors seemed cautiously optimistic, with shares trading flat in early afternoon. Still, the report serves as a reminder that even the biggest players in fast food are not immune to the shifting habits of price-sensitive customers. McDonald's plans to test a revised deal structure in select markets before the end of the year.
