Grocery shopping has become a game of strategy as inflation continues to stretch household budgets. To see which retailer offers the best value right now, I took a standard list of 15 common items to three major players: Walmart, Kroger, and Amazon Fresh. The results were surprising, especially given Walmart's recent price rollbacks on thousands of items.
The shopping list included staples like milk, eggs, bread, chicken breast, bananas, a bag of apples, pasta, pasta sauce, shredded cheese, butter, coffee, peanut butter, a dozen eggs, a loaf of whole wheat bread, and a gallon of milk. I compared prices at a physical Walmart and Kroger store, then checked the same items on Amazon Fresh for delivery.
Walmart came out on top with a total of $47.23. The retailer's rollbacks, which are temporary price cuts meant to lure budget-conscious shoppers, made a clear difference on items like butter and coffee. Kroger landed in second place at $51.87, with slightly higher prices on produce and dairy. Amazon Fresh was the most expensive at $56.14, largely due to higher per-unit costs on meat and packaged goods, though it offered the convenience of delivery.
What stood out most was the gap on fresh items. Walmart's produce was competitive, but Kroger had better quality on apples and bananas for the price. Amazon's produce was hit or miss, and the delivery fee added to the total. For shoppers willing to drive, Walmart is the clear winner. But if time is money, Kroger's loyalty discounts and Amazon's convenience might still be worth the extra cost.
