Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has named James Lawrence as the new chair of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) board. Lawrence will now lead the governing body responsible for the oversight of Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) and six general aviation airports in the Twin Cities region.
Lawrence brings extensive experience in both the public and private sectors to this critical role. His background includes leadership positions in law and community development, equipping him with a deep understanding of the complex operational, economic, and community relations facets of running a major airport system. The MAC board's responsibilities are wide-ranging, covering everything from financial management and capital projects to noise mitigation and concessions.
The appointment comes at a pivotal time for air travel in the region. MSP, a central hub for Delta Air Lines, is a major economic engine for Minnesota, supporting thousands of jobs and facilitating billions in economic activity annually. Lawrence will be tasked with guiding the commission through ongoing challenges and opportunities, including post-pandemic passenger recovery, long-term infrastructure planning, and maintaining the airport's high standards for customer service and efficiency. His leadership will be instrumental in shaping the future of aviation connectivity for the state.
