Chinese company demands compensation from U.K. over British Steel nationalization

Chinese company demands compensation from U.K. over British Steel nationalization

Jingye Group, the Chinese industrial conglomerate that previously owned British Steel, has formally demanded compensation from the United Kingdom government. The request comes after the UK authorities moved to nationalize the struggling steelmaker last week, a decision that left Jingye facing significant financial losses on its investment.

The company argues that the sudden nationalization violated the terms of its ownership and has caused substantial damage to its financial interests. Jingye acquired British Steel in 2020 for around 50 million pounds, rescuing the company from liquidation and preserving thousands of jobs. Since then, the Chinese firm claims it invested heavily in upgrading facilities and modernizing operations, only to see the government step in and take control without offering fair recompense.

British Steel had been struggling under the weight of high energy costs, weak demand, and aging infrastructure. The UK government justified the nationalization as a necessary step to protect the strategic steel industry and safeguard employment in key regions. However, Jingye insists that the move was premature and that it was not given a reasonable opportunity to restructure the business on its own terms.

The demand for compensation now sets the stage for a potential legal dispute between the Chinese company and the British government. Jingye has indicated that it will pursue all available legal avenues if a satisfactory settlement is not reached. The case highlights the ongoing tensions between foreign investors and national governments over the control of critical industries.
