Whatnot, the live shopping platform known for its fast-paced auctions and collector-focused marketplace, is reportedly in discussions to raise funds at a valuation of roughly $20 billion. That figure would mark a dramatic leap from its previous valuation of around $4.9 billion in 2022, signaling a strong rebound for the company after a broader tech downturn.
The startup has carved out a niche in the livestream commerce space by focusing on high-engagement categories like trading cards, vintage fashion, sneakers, and luxury handbags. Unlike traditional e-commerce, Whatnot lets sellers host live video streams where viewers can buy items in real time, often through rapid-fire auctions. The model has proven sticky with both collectors and casual shoppers looking for entertainment along with their purchases.
Industry observers point to the platform's ability to drive repeat visits and impulse buys as a key factor in its growth. Whatnot has also expanded into new verticals, including electronics and home goods, while tightening its moderation tools to prevent fraud and counterfeit sales. The company takes a cut of each transaction, typically around 8 percent, which has helped it generate steady revenue without relying on advertising.
If the $20 billion target holds, Whatnot would join a small group of privately held commerce startups valued at that level. The talks come as investors show renewed appetite for live shopping, a trend that struggled to gain traction in the U.S. until platforms like Whatnot and its rival, TalkShopLive, proved the format could work outside of Asia. The company has not commented publicly on the funding round.
