Atlanta megachurch pastor Jamal Bryant has ignited a fresh debate about Black consumer spending, calling for a coordinated boycott of Asian-owned businesses in select areas to prove a point about economic leverage. The push comes after Bryant viewed a viral video from an Asian content creator, which he says exposed a painful imbalance in how Black dollars flow out of the community but rarely circulate back.
Speaking to his congregation and in subsequent interviews, Bryant argued that Black Americans collectively hold over a trillion dollars in annual buying power, yet much of that money leaves the community almost immediately. He pointed to the ubiquity of Asian-owned beauty supply stores, nail salons, and corner shops in predominantly Black neighborhoods as a prime example. "We spend billions in these stores, but how many Black-owned alternatives do we see?" Bryant asked. "We need to test whether our dollars are actually respected or just taken for granted."
The pastor proposed a short-term, targeted boycott of specific Asian-owned businesses in metro Atlanta, not as an act of racial hostility, but as a wake-up call. He wants Black consumers to redirect that spending toward Black-owned businesses for a set period, then track whether the lost revenue prompts any change in treatment or investment. Critics have accused Bryant of promoting division, arguing that boycotts along racial lines harm small business owners who are themselves often marginalized. Supporters counter that the pastor is simply applying the same economic pressure tactics that have historically worked for other groups.
Bryant insists the goal is not to punish Asian entrepreneurs, but to force a larger conversation about economic self-sufficiency. "If we can't survive without their stores for 30 days, that says something about us," he said. "And if they don't notice we're gone, that says something about them." The debate continues to spread across social media, with many asking whether Black spending power is truly as strong as the numbers suggest.
